Criminal Defense

Alterman & Associates, L.L.C. focuses its criminal defense practice in the representation of law enforcement officers charged with criminal offenses.  The attorneys at Alterman & Associates, L.L.C. put both their law enforcement and prosecutorial experience to work for their clients with the goal of achieving the best possible result.

Official Misconduct

In general, law enforcement officers can only be charged with Official Misconduct if an allegation is made that the officer committed certain criminal acts while on duty.  It is not uncommon, however, for a charge of Official Misconduct to arise out of some off-duty conduct as well.  Since the Official Misconduct statute was amended in 2008 to include a 5 year period of parole ineligibility if convicted, it is imperative that you retain the services of attorneys who not only know the criminal trial process but also have a complete understanding of the law enforcement community.

Excessive Force

We also routinely represent law enforcement officers who engage in use of force, such as shooting incidents, to ensure the officer is fairly treated and receives all rights and entitlements.

Our office responds to the scenes of these critical incidents to provide fast and effective legal representation at the time you need it most.  Our critical incident response covers any emergency throughout the state to make sure that our clients are taken care of.

Other offenses that law enforcement officers commonly face are aggravated assault, DUI, and domestic violence, to name a few.  Many offenses, if convicted, include an automatic forfeiture of public office pursuant to NJSA 2C:52-16.  That is why it is extremely important to have an attorney who knows the impact that a conviction can have not only on your ability to remain a law enforcement officer, but on issues like your pension as well.
